Sunday, December 26, 1999: Nairobi
Our last day in Africa. We finished up packing, which if you've never tried to do with a three-foot tall giraffe, is creative.
The day wasn't much to speak of: some photos, some tears, and a final drive through Nairobi. It was a crystal clear, sunny day, our first crystal clear day in Nairobi (Nairobi is about as high as Denver, and is prone to cloudy days). We caught some beers after checking in at the airport, said our goodbyes at customs, and boarded South African Airways Flight 183 to Johannesburg. In keeping with our final, true African flight of the trip, they herded us out of the smoking area at 3 p.m., as we were the last ones to board, and we took off a half-hour early. The only notable things about the flight: no near-Earth experiences with Kilimanjaro, and Jen and I had a bit too much fun with the open bar on the plane. Food was delicious.
Lufthansa Flight 573 took off on time by Western standards, at about 9 p.m., fifteen minutes late, for our final leg. Phase 1 of the trip was coming to the end, though we were planning to wander around Frankfurt during our seven hour layover. We drank a bit more, then passed out after a couple of good movies
